The Jefferson County Alabama Court Mediation Project was created in 1999 by V. Michelle Obradovic. It is managed through the Conflict Resolution Alliance of Alabama, a non-profit, and was founded with a grant from a private foundation and was funded for several years thereafter by a mini-grant from the Alabama Supreme Court. Although begun as a pilot program, the Mediation Project quickly became widely accepted. The Mediation Project covers
the Pro Se and Small Claims dockets of all three Civil District Court Judges
at the Jefferson County Courthouse on Friday mornings. Our success rate has
remained around 67% to 68% and our volume has been well in excess of 400
cases resolved each year. In 2003, the Mediation Project accepted an invitation from Presiding Judge of the Jefferson County Circuit Court, the Honorable Scott Vowell, to expand the Project to include Ad Valorem tax appeal cases in Jefferson County. The Project mediates approximately 100 cases per tax year with a historical resolution rate of 97% or better. 2006 marked an expansion into the Family Court through a cooperative effort with Cumberland School of Law’s Community Mediation Center. 2008 was a phenomenal year of growth for the Project in the Criminal courts, including Juvenile matters, Restorative Justice, Victim/ Offender conferencing, Domestic Violence and other violent crimes - a result made possible by joint effort between a variety of community stakeholders. Partnering meetings continue on an ongoing basis, and anyone is welcome to contribute their perspective on these complex issues. For information about the Mediation Project, please contact: V.
